Hands-on Learning and Experience

At Northport Nursery School we encourage the social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth of each child in a nurturing, safe and fun environment. We want our students to learn and grow as individuals and as members of a group, so we use programs flexible enough to focus on the specific needs and strengths of each student and structured enough to include all curricular areas.

What is a typical day like?

We use developmentally appropriate activities to address the cognitive needs of all of our students. Fine and gross motor activities are incorporated into the children’s daily routines to help meet their developing physical needs. Every day is organized to allow for alternating periods of active and quiet time.

The daily routine includes:

  • Free choice / center time
  • Circle / meeting time
  • Songs and fingerplays
  • Art / project time
  • Music and movement
  • Snack
  • Storytime
  • Playground/gross motor activities

Concepts and skills are presented through weekly themes and include:

  • Language/literacy skills
  • Children’s literature
  • Math/science skills
  • Fine/gross motor activities
  • Perception and sensory experiences
  • Songs and fingerplays
  • Music and movement activities
  • Art experiences
  • Dramatic play opportunities
  • Cooking experiences
