Help Support This Great Project!

We are so excited to begin the construction of Northport Nursery School’s outdoor classroom! The benefits of outdoor play are endless; at NNS, we believe outdoor play is critical to a child’s well-being, learning and personal growth.

“If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing antidote against the boredom and disenchantments of later years, the sterile preoccupation with things artificial, the alienation from the sources of our strength.

If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder without any such gift from the fairies, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.”

– Rachel Carson

At Northport Nursery School, we believe it is our role as educators to keep alive that inborn sense of wonder that is present in every young child. We have done this in our classrooms and on our playground as part of this community for the past 75 years. This year, we are working on a very special wish, one that will breathe new life into the school and make us (even more) special.

In order to appeal to our students’ sense of wonder in the great outdoors, and to expand our teaching methods, we are planning an Outdoor Classroom in our unused arboreal backyard space. Like our indoor classrooms, there will be designated areas for meetings, art, music, movement, building, free exploration and water play.

Our goal is to increase the time that our children spend outdoors, all while nurturing that sense of wonder so critical to a child’s well-being and personal growth.

We need your help. Donate today and help us get one step closer to making this outdoor classroom a reality!
